Learn the Economy the Potter way
Amanda at Young and Broke had an excellent post yesterday on Potter Economics.
As a Potter fan, of both the books and movies, myself, I find it really intriguing that J.K.Rowling took the time to include something as “adult”, and sophisticated, as an economic structure in her so-called (not by me, however) “children’s” books.
Read the post, it is very indepth. The thing that is being overlooked is that it’s about time. It’s about time that a mainstream “children’s” book included some touches of real life economy. How many childrens books include such bits as the children getting what ever they want with no mention whatsoever of monetary restrictions? Like Amanda, I’m glad that J.K. Rowling included an economy in her novels. Whether they know it or not, young adults that read the Harry Potter series are learning something. Some may learn a little more than others, but at least there’s something to be learned. There are plenty of other things that can be learned from the series, and that is one of the reasons that the series is so popular. A great story didn’t hurt either.
