Know Your Weakness

It happens all the time, even to the best of us. We go into a store, and right there in front of us is temptation. For some it might be hobby supplies (my wife), for others it might be geek toys (a friend of mine), and for some others it is anything they can reach (my girls). So what to do so you don’t blow your finances? Know what your weakness is and plan!

Let me explain with a personal example. My weakness is my 3 little girls. As my wife says, they have me wrapped around their little fingers tight! “Daddy’s little girls” is an understatement. So before we go on a shopping trip, I plan. I check my budget, I look at upcoming expenses and income, and I see if there is any spoil money available. If not, I make sure my wife knows - two are better than one when it comes to resisting temptation. On the other hand, if we do have some spoil money, then I know how much I have to play with.

Since I know my weakness, and I have planned ahead, I will not be caught off guard or trapped into an impulse buy that we cannot afford. So by knowing a little bit about myself, and by a little planning, I can be the hero Dad and still be financially fiscal! Win win!

P.S. Yes, we did go shopping at Costco the other day, and yes the little princesses did get a DVD - that’s why I can blog right now.
