A Typical American Family?

In the May issue of Readers Digest they describe a fictional typical American Famiy. Some of the things shared:

  • James and Mary (parents) are the most popular male and female names in the US
  • John and Patricia are the second most common names
  • James shoots a 96 in golf, Mary a 108
  • The daughter watches 2.5 hours of TV a day
  • The son downloads 183 songs a year
  • This family lives in a 2,469 square-foot house
  • Their combined salary is $48,451
  • The family spends $189 a week on groceries
  • Each person devours 156 hamburgers a year

For one thing, someone else is eating my share of hamburgers! That’s one hamburger every 2.3 days! For another thing, my family of five spends a little more than half of what this typical family spends on groceries. What are they buying? I guess hamburgers!

I was also a little surpirsed that the annual combined salary was only around $48,000. I thought It would have been a little higher than that. And I must admit that I was shocked to see that the average home was over 2,000 square feet. That too seems a little big for the average.

I wonder how this average family is doing financially? I would guess they would be struggling to make ends meet. With their salary, a mortgage and car payment, etc. I think things would be tight. What’s your take on this?

This family on this income needs to spend less on groceries and probably go on a burger free diet

Give up golf, hamburgers and cut grocery costs.

Fay and LaDonna I am with you! I like hamburgers, but every other day? This family needs some serious budgeting help. Thanks for sharing.
