Sunday Thought 24
by JD on December 7, 2008
I am troubled by some of the things I have been reading lately. Whether it is bailouts of companies (banks, financial institutions, auto companies, etc.) or individuals looking for hand-outs or ways to go into bankruptcy, it seems we don’t want to take responsibility for our actions. As long as you can get a bankruptcy judge or the Federal Government to agree with you, you can avoid responsibility.
What happened to responsibility and fulfilling our obligations? When money is borrowed, there’s a responsibility to pay it back – a least there used to be. No wonder there is a credit crisis. Who would want to lend money knowing there is a good chance the person (or company) you lent to will skip out? There is no sense of duty or obligation, no willingness to sacrifice to fulfill your vow or promise (that is why they call it a promissary note right?).
Let us be people of our word. It is best not to have debt, but for those of us who do have debt (myself included), let us fulfill our obligation.
Do not withhold good from those to whom it is due, when it is in your power to do it. Do not say to your neighbor, “Go, and come back, and tomorrow I will give it,” when you have it with you. (Bible, Proverbs 3:27-28).
