Sunday Thought 29

I find it incredible how attached to money and wealth we are. We bemoan the fact that we have suffered losses in our stock portfolio, while others around the world suffer loss from malnutrition and disease. As the media has reported, some individuals have killed themselves rather than go on living without their wealth, while the rest of the world slowly kills themselves to earn money for a loaf of bread to feed their family.
As a pastor, I spend time with those who are sick and dying. Time and again they tell me about their riches: their spouse, their children, their grandchildren, and the times they spent with them. That is the treasure that they miss.
A happy marriage, children, good friends, health, even contentment with work and life–those are a blessing and a treasure far beyond material riches.
Behold, children are a gift of the Lord; the fruit of the womb is a reward (Psalm 127:3).
A faithful man will abound with blessings, but he who makes haste to be rich will not go unpunished (Proverbs 28:20).
