Ask for a Discount!

by JD on April 14, 2009

Yesterday I was reminded why it’s good to ask for a discount.  Our family went shopping and we stopped in at Sears to look at deck storage boxes. We saw several that we liked, and almost all of them were on sale. A combination that we liked was a small box and a medium box that also doubled as  chairs (1 and 2 people respectively). The small one was on sale, but of course the other one was not.

So I asked the sales clerk (after several minutes of trying to find one!) if we could get a discount if we bought both items. She said she didn’t know. So I asked if she could ask someone who did know! (Do not be afraid to work your way up the chain!). She said she would get the manager. When the manager came she looked up the product and said- but it is on sale (Of course no one would know that because it was not marked that way – it was listed as full price).

Anyway, the manager made sure we got the sale prices on both. Now, would we have gotten the sale price if we had just taken the item to the register? I am not sure, because the clerk had to manually enter the information to get the sale price. But either way, the point is to ask for discounts, especially in this economy – it doesn’t hurt to ask and often you will be rewarded!

As a plus – because the items were larger, we had to pick them up at their pick-up center. They guarantee 5 minute delivery (once you scan your sales receipt in at the pick up kiosk) or they will give you a $5 off coupon for future purchases. My delivery time was 9 minutes. I asked for the coupon and got it right away – but I noticed the employee wasn’t go to say anything until I asked.

Not a bad day of shopping! Again, remember, it’s your money – ask for discounts, talk to whoever is authorized to make deals, and by all means remind employees of savings, coupons, etc. Go for it!
