I have a confession. I love hot dogs. It runs in our family (on my mother’s side). I know what people say – there not good for you, do you know what’s in them, etc. Hey, I eat scrapple too – so I have no fear of what’s in a hot dog!
But I digress. It seems like around my area, as soon as spring hits, everyone is giving away free hot dogs. In the past few years I have gotten free hot dogs from:
- Car dealerships
- Local businesses
- Nonprofit groups
- City festivals
- Neighbors & Friends
And usually it’s not just me, but the whole family gets a free lunch (they usually also serve a canned drink and chips or pretzels!). So for the cost of about 5 miles of gas, I can get the whole family fed. Not a bad deal. And, it’s not just hot dogs – some groups serve pizza, or subs / sandwhiches, etc.
I know the goal is to get you to buy (business), or to donate (charity). And we usually only go to places that we have done business with or have given to (charity). The one exception was the car dealership – I couldn’t help myself!
Anyway, my children love it, my wife tolerates it, and we score free food. You can usually find out about these giveaways in your local free paper (pennysaver, etc.), or by looking on community bulletin boards in public places (banks, grocery stores, etc.).
Now it won’t save you a bundle, but it can be a fun little excursion and save you a few bucks on a meal.
Besides, what’s better than a hot dog? A free one of course!

There is something about a great hot dog, isn’t there? I know that whenever we go to a Detroit Tigers game, we have to buy a hot dog, even if we just had dinner beforehand!
