I hate to wait. Whether it was when I was little and wanted to grow up quick (not so much anymore!), or waiting in line, or waiting to purchase something I wanted, I do not like to wait. And that is part of our problem – we will not wait so we go into debt to get what we want now.
This is so unlike Jacob in the Old Testament. He wanted something, in particular a wife. Now Jacob loved a girl named Rachel, so he agreed to work seven years for her. “So Jacob served seven years for Rachel and they seemed to him but a few days because of his love for her.” [Genesis 29:20]
Now besides being a great love story, it is also a story of patience and perseverance. After working those seven years, he was tricked by Laban (Rachel’s Dad), and was given her sister Leah! So Jacob ended up working another seven years for Rachel. Fourteen years he worked for the love of his life.
How many of us have that kind of patience and perseverance? If something is that important to us to have, we should be able to wait and work for it. In this respect, we all need to be a little bit more like Jacob.
P.S. Yes Honey, I would have worked 14 years for you! Love You!!!
