In a recent article in a magazine, Dr. John Trent talks about the time he fell asleep at the wheel of his car and drifted across several lanes of traffic. He didn’t wake up until his wheels hit the shoulder of the road at freeway speed. When he awoke he realized he had a big problem. So he thought he needed a big solution. So he turned his steering wheel 180 degrees trying to get back on the road. He rolled his car three times. Fortunately he was able to walk away with only cuts and bruises.
In our financial life, we can be tempted to do the same thing. We have drifted off course, maybe have taken on debt, and realize we have a big problem. So we look for a big solution. And that can cause a wreck!
Dr. Trent’s solution? Two degree changes. Small changes / adjustments, a little at a time, can become powerful tools in getting us back on track. Faithfully doing small things can bring great rewards. And it is easier, and you are more likely to succeed, if you do a little at a time rather then trying one big change.
This not only works for finances, but also for relationship issues. If you would like to see examples of this at work, you can read Dr. John Trent’s book “The 2 Degree Difference” (which focuses on relationships) or by visiting his web site at strongfamilies.com.
