Sunday Thought 82

What do you do when you borrow something? And it breaks? Or you are working with someone, and you are using their tool and it breaks? Or how about a rental-you rent a machine and it gets broken?

If a man borrows anything from his neighbor, and it is injured or dies while its owner is not with it, he shall make full restitution. If its owner is with it, he shall not make restitution; if it is hired, it came for its hire.”–Exodus 22:14-15

This makes sense doesn’t it? If your neighbor is with you while you are using the tool and it breaks – you do not owe anything, they saw what happened, how you were using the tool, etc. (that doesn’t mean you can’t offer some compensation if you like). And if you are renting, you have paid them for the use of the tool, and included in the rental is the risk that it might break.

Now, there may be extenuating circumstances – for example, total misuse of the tool for a purpose not intended, or you want to be a blessing  to the other person – but overall, these are pretty good rules to live by.

Scripture is practicable and for everyday living!
