My wife has been sick on and off (mostly sick) for three months. This Tuesday she will be having sinus surgery to hopefully make her better. Over these last several months we have had so many friends and family come to help us – we are truly grateful! Their kindnesses and effort made me think of the story in Mark chapter 2:
When He [Jesus] had come back to Capernaum several days afterward, it was heard that he was at home. And many were gathered together, so that there was no longer room, not even near the door; and he was speaking the word to them. And they came, bringing to Him a paralytic, carried by four men. Being unable to get to Him because of the crowd, they removed the roof above Him; and when they had dug an opening, they let down the pallet on which the paralytic was lying. And Jesus seeing their faith said to the paralytic, “Son, your sins are forgiven”…I say to you, get up, pick up your pallet and go home.” And he got up and immediately picked up the pallet and went out…
Those were some good friends. They didn’t let anything stop them from helping their paralytic friend. And others noticed – Jesus saw their faith, not the paralytics, but his friends and all the effort they put into helping their friend to get better. And it pleased Him.
Our friends and family have put forth the same effort to help us, and we are grateful. This story from Mark, and the help of our friends and family, make me wonder if I am that good of a friend? Our friends have given of their time and money – making meals, cleaning the house, bringing gifts to the children to put a smile on their face, etc. Would Jesus smile at my faith and effort on behalf of others? I hope so.
