Real Disappearing money

Many of us claim that our money disappears before we get a chance to spend it, but this is a little extreme.

German officials are trying to figure out how some 1,500 euro bank notes were contaminated with acid, sometimes causing the bills to disintegrate.

Imagine getting your money from an ATM and having it fall apart in your hands.  Quite the conundrum.  There is appearantly speculation that it could be a quasi-terror bid in efforts to upset the German economy, but officials are saying that they believe the bills were contaminated by cash dispensing machines.  The machines are scheduled for inspection and will be replaced  if they are found to be the source of the contamination.

Thanks to my Referrers

As a part of running this blog, building a network of like-minded people and linking to them is very important.  Each of the following are a part of that.  They are the sites that I see traffic coming from on a regular basis.  Some are probably being left out, and for that I apologize.

Please take a moment and read what these folks have to say.  If you haven’t already.

Also, there is no particular order to these, so don’t read anything into the order.

A big thank you to all of you!

As an added note, I don’t drive a lot of traffic, but I do keep a linkroll on the left hand side of this site.  If you’d like to be added to the list, submit your site through the contact form.  I can’t guarantee you’ll get added, but I’ll consider it.  A couple of guidelines before you do, however.  Established sites only.  There’s entirely too much turnover to go listing each and every 3 day old blog.  3 months minimum. I’d prefer at least two posts a week, but I’ll consider less.  Also, if your blog is even slightly spammy, include a defense of that in your submission.

What is A Penny Saved… About?

It’s become clearer to me in the last few days that there can be some confusion with the name of this blog and the purpose of this blog from the comments on my post “Where are the wealthy bloggers?

Perhaps it would have been better to select a different name other than A Penny Saved.  I understand the arguement that A Penny Saved… brings about images of scrooges miserly collecting every penny.  I also understand how one could take it to mean that the content here is merely about saving.

It’s not.  It’s about making yourself better financially.  Saving is one of the elements of that.  There are many other elements to that as well.  A close look at the history of articles on this site would show that while I do cover saving, I also cover most every other element of financial soundness.

Perhaps one day I will change the name to better depict that, but until then, please don’t judge a blog by it’s cover.  A Penny Saved can very easily be invested and made into great wealth.  If you only go about it the right way.

Why I dislike Millionaires in the making

CnnMoney runs a column called Millionaires in the making. Each time it’s published, they spotlight a new couple that are on the right track to becoming millionaires. For example, this time around the couple is The Johnsons.

I truly despise these articles. Each and everyone of the couples that they spotlight usually make well over $100,000 a year. Most make over $200,000 a year.

Let me tell you, if I made nearly a quarter of a million a year, I could be a millionaire in the making too. Show me a couple who makes $50,000 a year that has everything in order and are making themselves millionaires. Then I’ll be impressed. But don’t show me someone who Grosses a million every 4-10 years. That doesn’t seem like much of a challenge to become a millionaire if you make that much money.

What do you include in your raise?

When I wrote about not being excited for my next raise a few days ago, I was only speaking of the actual raise to the salary.  There are other things that the company pays for that went up in cost, but that I do not see.  Such things as Health Insurance that raise quite a bit each year.

If I had included the extra Health Insurance cost to my raise, my raise would have been almost exactly the rate of inflation.  That still wouldn’t have made me happy, but it does get it a little closer.

What do you include in your raise?  Do you look at just the salary increase or the increase of non-salary items like Health Insurance and increased contributions to retirement accounts?

More on Zecco

I’ve begun writing on a Zecco Blog as of Tuesday of this week.  I don’t plan on posting more than 2-3 posts a week over there and they most likely will end up being short pieces.

They will however be more geared towards the investing community.  Mostly stock picks, and musings on the investing world.  I don’t normallly put up posts like that here simply because they usually are only worth the space for a few days and then are completely out of date.

Read the Thatedeguy@Zecco blog today!  It has an RSS feed as well, so add it to your rss reader too!
