Thesis may not be as dazzling visually, but it is a more sound framework. I’d rather have things working and a bit plain, rather than fancy, flashy, and broken half the time. Oh, and don’t worry, a fresh logo is in the works, just coming along slowly. I need to find a decent free image editor for OS X so I can get it squared away. If you have any tips, please feel free to drop me a comment below.

No, I don’t mean threaded commments – I mean new threads as in a new look! After weeks of looking for the perfect theme without spending $1,500, I finally broke down and purchased a good starting theme, and then customized it more to my liking. There’s a lot of work to go still, especially working on the sidebar to improve looks ( and probably adding a large footer )… but I think the improved look warranted pushing this theme out today.

If you see any problems, please leave me a comment with the issue, and the browser you are using. As far as I can tell, the layout works in Firefox, IE7, and Chrome. I don’t have Safari to test it on, or Opera. So if you see something loopy, please let me know.

With that in mind, I finally took it upon myself to replace Ben with Honest Abe. You know, that guy who’s on the penny. Now you’ll see Abe in the header, as well as up in your toolbar, and next to your bookmark listing. ( You do have A Penny Saved bookmarked right? )

A big change? Nope. But I think it fits the sit a lot better. Now new readers won’t be confused by the title / logo disparity. Besides, I think the penny looks nicer anyway – even if I’d rather have the hundred.

Since Sally and JD have been carrying the writing load lately ( thanks guys! ), I’ve had a bit of time to make some small code updates. Some you will see, some are more “behind the scenes” stuff. Basically I’m just trying to clean up the code here and make things load more quickly.

As far as visual stuff, I’ve moved the archives to their own page. That helps clean up the sidebar ( there were too many links ), and makes room for a new sponsors section. I’ve had several advertisers ask why I don’t offer any button style ads, so now I will. I will be incorporating 4 125×125 ads in the sidebar – always relevant ads, of course. If you have a relevant site or service and you’d like to advertise on A Penny Saved, please contact me.

I also fixed my search box! The first time my wife saw A Penny Saved in it’s current design, she pointed at the search box and said “what in the world is that? Is it a search box or what? It doesn’t say.” So, honey, I fixed it for you. Now it is clearly labeled as a search box – no confusion.

Last but not least, I’m in the process of consolidating the categories. The category list is unwieldy – it’s far too long. This is going to be an ongoing process, so please bear with me. My goal is to make sure all posts end up in the best category, so everything works out well.

Anyway, just wanted to give everyone a heads up on the goings-on around here. I’m not posting as often but I didn’t move to Kazakhstan, and I’m still around. Here’s to saving your pennies, and building your net worth.

I am in my middle 40′s (closer to the upper!), I have been a Quality Control Coordinator for a computer company, have also been an Administrative Manager for a small manufacturing company, worked for a non profit enterprise in Personnel, and currently am an Administrative Pastor for a medium sized church. I have a Master of Divinity degree (MDiv) and a Master of Administration degree (MBA) which I guess makes me an educated fool. I own 60% of my home (the bank owns the rest), have a home equity loan at about $13,000, and no other debt. On the personal side, I have a wonderful wife of 20 years and we have 3 precious little girls.

I look forward to sharing some of the things I’ve learned along the way, and from learning from you!
