Death and Taxes

Death and Taxes are inevitable. (Thomas Chandler Haliburton–1796-1865)
While most people today are fixated on the latter (it being April 15th), I have been involved in the former. The church is preparing for a funeral tomorrow; I had an older lady and her son in my office earlier grieving - her husband of many years will probably [...]

No Free Loans

I received my Tax Refund yesterday - a whole $100! I try to keep my refund as low as possible. It’s part of my philosophy of not “lending” money to government or companies for free. I don’t like giving free loans. So at the beginning of the year I estimate my taxes, and then I [...]

The Car Is A Lie

Turns out we won’t be getting the ‘98 Contour. The transmission was busted, so it’s already been re-sold–at a profit. Don’t ask me, I have no idea how my roommate’s dad does it. Damn, and I was looking forward to driving a car that was only ten years old.
In more exciting news, my state tax [...]

Here come the expenses!

The medical expenses have added up recently. Our family has over $700 in medical costs right now. All on eye glasses and dentists - wow! Good thing we have a Flexible Spending Account program at work, and that I still have enough to cover all this! For those of you who may not be familiar [...]

Reader Question

In a previous Post (Social Security Statement - 11/4/07), I mentioned that I was considered self-employed for Social Security purposes because I was a pastor. One of our astute readers asked a very good question. Here is her comment/question:
You fail to mention that as a pastor you had the opportunity to opt out of [...]

Taxes Filed

We got our taxes filed last night.  A little later than I had anticipated, but still well before the April 17 due date.
We once again filed Married Filing Joint as it made nearly a $500 difference in the refund we are getting.  Not exactly a small chunk of change.  Having a child to claim certainly [...]

Split your tax refund up to 3 ways

Starting with your 2006 taxes, you now have much more flexibility in what you do with your refund.
Now you can:

Split your refund with direct deposits into two or three checking or savings accounts

Direct deposit your refund into one checking or savings account

Receive your refund as a paper check in the mail

Splitting your refund is easy. [...]

April 17th, 2007: Tax Day

This year, taxes must be filed by April 17th instead of the normal April 15th deadline.  The reason is that April 15th lands on a Sunday this year and that Monday the 16th is Emancipation day in the District of Columbia.
Not that a few extra days is probably going to help you if you haven’t [...]

Retirement Savings Contributions Credit

If you meet the criteria, you can claim up to a 50% credit for contributions to a qualifying retirement savings account(a.k.a Saver’s Credit).  I’ve used it in the past and if everything falls into place this year, I might qualify again.  It’s gonna be close though.
Here’s how you qualify.

You’ve got to have been born before [...]

The Ernst & Young Tax Guide 2007

As I mentioned before, and as evidenced by my theme for the week (tax week), tax season is upon us.  As I also mentioned, I got a nice copy of the 2007 Ernst & Young Tax Guide(aff).  And boy oh boy is it a hefty Goliath of a tax guide.
Aside from the few days surrounding [...]
